While PronSIG is passionate about staying up to date with the latest technology to support pronunciation teaching and learning and sharing that with our members and followers, we know that these resources are not always accessible or available for all classrooms and all teachers. With this in mind, our 2025 scholarship is inspired by our 2024 PCE day Pronunciation ‘unplugged’: teachers as resources for low-tech classrooms, where we consider ways and means of teaching pronunciation in low-tech and low resource environments with little more than our bodies and a pen and paper!

In thinking about your interest in this area, maybe …

  • you have an idea for pronunciation teaching which would suit a low-resource or low-tech teaching scenario.
  • you already use pronunciation activities in a low-tech or low-resource scenario,
  • you wish to explore an idea or approach in your teaching more and share these findings with others.

What we want?

We are asking for classroom-based action research proposals to expand the knowledge we have about pronunciation teaching in low-tech and low-resource classroom settings. The word ‘research’ can seem scary, but classroom-based action research is a simple and effective thing for any teacher to do as part of our CPD.

You’ll get support and mentoring to undertake a simple action research project for your idea or activities and to write an article to publish the findings in PronSIG’s journal, Speak Out!

What you’ll receive:

  • 1000 GBP grant to support your travels to the 2025 conference in Edinburgh and accommodation once there,
  • Free entry to the IATEFL Conference and PronSIG’s PCE day,
  • A session to present your research at a future/upcoming PronSIG event,
  • Support and mentoring to plan and complete your classroom-based action research project,
  • Support and mentoring to publish your findings in PronSIG’s biannual journal Speak Out!

What you’ll need:

  • You MUST be an IATEFL PronSIG member already, or planning to join at the time of submitting your scholarship proposal. Access to the scholarship is a benefit of membership, and as such, we cannot accept proposals from those who are not part of the SIG.
  • An idea or activities which use pronunciation in a low-tech or low-resource environment.
  • A classroom setting where you can complete your action research.
  • Time and motivation to run a short action research project.

The submission deadline is 16.00 (UK time) on 19 June 2024. Early submissions are very welcome; late submissions will not be considered.

The result of your application will be emailed to you (date TBA). Please do NOT contact the IATEFL Head Office about scholarship decisions; the Scholarship Committee will send everyone the results as soon as they are available.

Good luck!
