Abstract:

In the field of English language teaching (ELT), Teacher Associations (TAs) play a crucial role in fostering professional development, knowledge sharing, and networking among educators (Motteram, 2016). Over the years, as the importance of pronunciation for our learners’ communicative competence has become better understood and the endemic lack of teacher training in pronunciation pedagogy recognised (Murphy, 2017), TAs dedicated solely to pronunciation instruction, such as the BRAZ-TESOL PronSIG and IATEFL PronSIG, have appeared offering valuable opportunities for teachers to develop skills often missing from early career training.

To explore the impact of pronunciation-focused TAs on teachers in more depth, the IATEFL PronSIG committee surveyed members of several pronunciation-focused associations (IATEFL PronSIG, BRAZ-TESOL PronSIG, TESOL SPLIS and CATESOL-TOP-IG) and conducted focus group discussions. Findings show that membership can positively affect teachers’ confidence, knowledge and more. They can also foster a welcoming community for mentoring and collaboration.

Join the IATEFL PronSIG and BRAZ-TESOL PronSIG on March 8 for a special anniversary webinar as we discuss the results of this study and celebrate 40 years of SIG support in a pronunciation café event where we will meet, mingle and chat with teachers from around the world.

Please note the webinar is free for all to attend, but the certificates of attendance will be sent to IATEFL members only.
